A flower that will relax and heal.
I have loved lavender for as long as I can remember. I find the smell so relaxing. When our son was little and couldn’t sleep we would put a few drops of lavender in the aromatherapy diffuser.
This would help relax him and promote sleep for all of us. You will also find various lavender plants around our garden.
Lavender can be both an annual plant or a short lived perennial commonly grown in shrub form. The most common plants are French Lavender, English Lavender and Spanish Lavender.
The plant grows well in full sun, well drained sandy soil. Lavender is generally hand harvested. Used in bouquets. Or dried and preserved.
The flowers are also used for their oils. Such as lavender essential oils.
Healing with lavender.
Lavender oil is know to help with restless sleep, insomnia and anxiety. It can also be used as a mosquito repellent.
The essential oil can be applied topically with a carrier oil on the stomach area to calm intestinal discomfort. Lavender can also be used to sooth inflammation of the skin such as scraps and burns.
Lavender essential oil can be added to water in a diffuser. Or added to coconut oil (carrier oil) to use as a massage or topical lotion.
You will notice lavender is added to a lot of bath and beauty products because of it’s healing and relaxing properties. Lavender is also a mellow sweet smell that is popular.
Did you know that lavender is edible?
English lavender is usually used for culinary purposes in teas, main dishes and desserts. You can also purchase lavender honey which is amazing on toast or biscuits.
Lavender pairs well in baked goods such as scones or pastries and goes well with chocolate. Most culinary recipes will call for dried lavender buds.
Lavender buds paired with earl grey tea leaves make a wonderful tea. They can also be added to a latte to make it a bit more elegant.
You can make lavender sugar at home: place dried lavender buds in granular sugar for two weeks to allow oils and flavors to transfer. Once the lavender buds are removed the flavored sugar can be used in most baking dishes or served with tea.
Lavender can be used in cakes, pastries and sweets. It can also be used in breads, soups and stews or additions to pasta sauces. Lavender has also been used in drinks as a flavor component and decorative component.
Lavender is popular in the herb combination of herbes de Provence.
Amazing lavender products.
Besides the lavender flower itself I think my favorite product is lavender essential oil. I add it to everything. I will add lavender essential oil to massage lotion, to bath water, to our diffuser.
I have even added it to our homemade cleaning solution. We also add lavender essential oil to our dryer balls to give our clothes a fresh scent.
In my kitchen you will find lavender honey, lavender earl grey tea and sometime a few lavender sweets.
