What to eat and what not to eat?
Pregnancy is a vital time to watch what you eat and drink for the care of both you and the baby. There are certain foods and drinks that can be harmful to both you and the baby if consumed during pregnancy.
7 Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy:
1. Deli Meats
Sandwich meats, deli meats, cold cuts are all possible sources of listeria bacteria and should be avoided during pregnancy as they can endanger the baby.
A great alternative is home cooking a ham or turkey in the Instant Pot and making a sandwich with this meat. Then you know how it was prepared and cooked. Home cooked is always better.
2. Raw Fish
Sushi is out while you are pregnant. Consumption of all raw seafood is to be avoided during pregnancy due to possibility of bacteria.
This doesn’t mean avoid your favorite Asian cuisine while you are pregnant, simply opt for a cooked version of you favorite foods like teriyaki.
3. Unpasteurized Cheese
This is all soft cheeses like feta, blue cheese and brie. Unpasteurized cheese is not “cooked” or pasteurized to rid it of harmful bacteria. You favorite cheese may have bacteria which can be harmful to the baby.
A healthy choice is opting for hard pasteurized cheeses like cheddar for your next snack.
4. High Mercury Fish
Canned tuna is a great healthy snack but not when you are pregnant. Tuna is a fish that can be high in mercury levels which is not safe for both you and the unborn child.
If you are craving seafood, cook up a piece of salmon and use that for your salad or sandwich.
5. Under Cooked Meats
In some locations under cooked or rare meats are an everyday thing. It is suggested that you avoid rare and under cooked meats during pregnancy due to bacteria and parasites.
6. Junk Food
During pregnancy you are feeding both you and the baby. You need to make healthy choices for both of you. Consuming high sugar, processed junk foods provides little nutrients to either of you.
Opt instead for a piece of fruit, whole grain toast with nut butter or homemade muffins.
Yes, I know it is not a food but I feel that it is important to including it on this list. Many people wonder and I know in Europe they …., but the best advice is to avoid it. For the health of your unborn child avoid the alcohol. Also for your health, alcohol is dehydrating.
There are some great mocktail recipes and ideas. My favorite is pineapple juice and sparkling water with a few frozen berries
Are you wondering what to eat during pregnancy?
One of the best books I got during my pregnancy was The Whole Nine Months. This book is great it follows along week, by week suggesting what types of healthy foods to incorporate when.
It also gives you insights into the changes occurring in your body and the growth of the baby. If you only buy one book during your pregnancy it should be this one it is fully loaded with the information you need.
Other items you should avoid during pregnancy.
During pregnancy you should avoid some essential oils such as peppermint and clary sage. You should also avoid raspberry leaf and hibiscus in tea. Coffee is recommended in moderation.
Also check the labels, some of your favorite products may not be recommended during pregnancy.
Have an amazing day,
